Immune System Project

Your group will construct a presentation board which illustrates the functions and parts of the Human Immune System.

Each group member must:

present a layout plan for construction of the presentation board on the back of objectives page of project outline
participate in a positive leadership position within your group
contribute as much effort as possible in collecting data and construction of the project
contribute work that is neat and complete
be responsible for your part
be present and on time to meet the deadline

Objectives

The following objectives are required to be included in this project:

Function of the Human Immune System
Explanation and illustration of:

The First Line of Defense; Primary Goal: Prevent Organisms from gaining access

ü Barriers that prevent pathogen entry into the body: at least 4

o The Second Line of Defense; Primary Goal: recognize, neutralize and destroy invaders

ü Phagocytic cells

ü Inflammatory response

o The Third line of Defense: Primary Goal: Specific defense mechanisms

ü Humoral response: (antibodies; B-lymphocytes)

ü Cell-mediated response; (cytotoxic T-lymphocytes), Cells target and destroy

“foreign” cells

· The major components of the immune system:

Lymph system, Thymus, Spleen, Bone marrow, White blood cells (5 types),

antibodies

· Consequences of Immune System Failure : 3 examples

· One Disease of the Immune System

· How Vaccination works

· How to Keep your Immune System Healthy

· Two interesting facts about the Immune System

· Concept map of the human immune system

Project must be completed on 1 regular size poster board- provided
Each group must use at least 3 foldables of your choice- examples posted in classroom; paper provided
Presentation Boards must be neat, organized and creative
Typing of information is allowed but not required
Use diagrams for illustrating "lymphoid organs"; All diagrams must be hand drawn
No colored markers

Vaccination

A weakened form of the disease germ is injected into the body. The body makes antibodies to fight these invaders. If actual disease germs ever attack the body, the antibodies will still be there to destroy them.
