WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?
- Make school a priority.
- Don't put too much pressure on your child.
- Praise the process/effort, not the final product.
- Build your child's confidence.
- Review test terms.
- Maintain two-way communication with your child.
- Don't give your child a choice unless you mean it.
- Set goals with, not for, your child. Then focus on one at a time.
- Expect progress.
- Make your child aware of his/her improvement; reward achievement.
- Praise generously yet honestly.
- Direct praise to the task at hand.
- Try not to show disappointment if your child does not do well on something
they worked really hard on.
- Be enthusiastic!! Use humor.
- Use timers and competition judiciously.
- Be prepared to teach.
- Provide variety; take breaks.
- Encourage independence.
- Take EVERY opportunity to build your child's self-esteem.
- Show a positive attitude toward school.
